15. NEWFrom The Chair’s Corner: A message from Chair Lynn Campbell

“Ballots drop in just 5 days! It is very important to cast your votes during the primary. Not only is there statistical evidence that supports that 90% of Primary voters will turn out for the November election, but funding for the candidates is dependent upon the results of the primary. Funding is hugely important to our candidates.  Many unions, as well as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC) do not release campaign contributions until after the Primary.

In a large part, Skagit County Democrats have chosen not to contribute to campaigns until after the primary, due to our limited financial resources during this pandemic. We are most anxious to financially support our candidates in addition to our efforts to turn out the votes. Our endorsement committee worked hard to interview and recommend endorsements to our membership. The membership voted on our endorsements and we stand behind our candidates.

I cannot urge you to vote strongly enough, as well as encourage you to get your friends and neighbors to vote. Every vote does matter and it will determine which of our candidates move forward in November. We have several key races happening in Skagit County. We have the County Commissioner races as well as important races in the 10th and the 39th districts. We have a chance to vote for a Democrat in our County Commissioner race against Ron Wesen. Mark Lundsten has proven to be an outstanding candidate in that race.

In the 10th, it is imperative we vote for Dave Paul who narrowly won that seat previously. In addition, we have a great opportunity to vote for Suzanne Woodard to replace Republican Norma Smith.

The 39th presents a great opportunity to finally get Democrats in office. Claus Joens is running against Sutherland, a long-standing very right-wing Republican who has stated publicly that mask wearing is not necessary. Ryan Johnson is running against Carolyn Eslick, and Kathryn Lewandowski, a Progressive, is running for Senator.

The 40th has an incredible team of legislators who are working hard to represent their constituents. Liz Lovelett (Senator), Debora Lekanoff (Representative), and Alex Ramel (Representative) have all done tremendous work on behalf of the 40th.

We also have the 2nd Congressional District race with two democrats vying for the seat. Rick Larsen (incumbent) and Jason Call are competing against each other. This is a very important race where the results of the primary determine which candidate is on the ballot in November.

Please vote. Please get your friends and neighbors to vote! Your vote really does have a direct impact on Skagit County races!”
